The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has awarded a $176 million contract to Hueber-Breuer Construction and Pike Co. (HBP) Joint Venture, of Rochester, NY, on October 23, for Phase 2 upgrades to the Canandaigua Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Canandaigua, NY.

Phase 2 is scheduled to begin spring of 2020, and includes demolition of Buildings 33 and 34 to provide adequate space for the construction of 8 single story, cottage style structures with a centralized Community Center. Renovations to Building 9 will accommodate domiciliary facilities and Logistic functions (Loading Dock).

Several existing buildings are also set to receive partial renovations in order to accommodate needed non-patient functions and swing-space. The site utilities will also receive upgrades to support the new/renovated spaces.

“Last year I was proud to stand with local veterans at the Canandaigua VA to launch my push to secure the funding needed to make this Phase 2 construction a reality. Together with the over $143 million I secured to break ground last year on phase 1, today’s construction contract award means over $300 million is being invested into our local economy and into new state-of-the-art upgrades to provide cutting-edge care to local veterans. This is a well-deserved prescription for better care for our Rochester and Finger Lakes area veterans and a shot in the arm for our local economy,” said U.S. Senator Charles Schumer.

“We are pleased and excited that Phase 2 will be starting here at the Canandaigua VA Medical Center,” said Bruce Tucker, Director for the VA Finger Lakes Healthcare System. The new facilities being built will provide Veterans with state-of-the-art nursing facilities and residential care environments that provide resident centered care in a homelike setting. This additional construction will position the Medical Center to continue provision of excellent care to our Veterans here at our historic campus both now and into the future.”

"We look forward to our ongoing partnership with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in this next phase of construction in Canandaigua. Phase 2 continues our relationship to provide the best facilities for our Veterans," said Andrew Keirn, Eastern Region Director for VA's Office of Construction and Facilities Management.

The Louisville and Buffalo districts take great pride in partnering together for a project that will forever have a place in serving those who served us first, our Veterans, our “Nation’s Heroes.” The Phase 1 and 2 VA Canandaigua projects are being delivered by one team staffed by the Buffalo and Louisville Districts of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Department of Veterans Affairs.
