U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Buffalo District kicks
off the start of Engineer’s week by hosting an Engineer Shadow Day for students
from Buffalo, NY area school districts.
Students from Hutch Tech, Niagara Falls, Tapestry Charter
School, and the Charter School for Applied Technologies visited the Buffalo
District, Thursday February 11, for a day of hands-on demonstrations given by
Buffalo District engineers, biologists, and project managers. The students practiced
real-world simulations, such as groundwater sampling, as part of an
environmental demonstration given by Environmental Health Specialists, Peter
Lorey and Matthew Masset.
A biology demonstration, given by Biologists, Shaina Souder
and Andy Francisco, will include an overview of the Regulatory Program, which
will involve a discussion of wetland ecology and the importance of wetland
preservation. After, the students split up into two groups and learn birding,
plant identification, and wildlife identification techniques.
Following a pizza lunch sponsored by the Society of American
Military Engineers (SAME), the students moved into work stations demonstrating computer
aided drawing (CAD), geotechnical engineering, and coastal engineering.
Engineer Shadow Day wrapped up with closing remarks by
Deputy District Commander MAJ Jared Runge.
Engineer Shadow Day provides Buffalo area students the
opportunity to gain a real-world understanding of all aspects of USACE Buffalo
District projects including operations and maintenance, environmental, regulatory,
planning, design, and geotechnical topics.
