Buffalo, NY – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Buffalo District is closing the Black Rock Lock to conduct repairs to the gates and lock anchorages from November 26, 2018 to May 4, 2019.

The lock will officially close on November 26, 2018 and construction is scheduled to commence that day.  The repairs will improve the Black Rock Lock infrastructure and sustain the functionality for future navigation seasons.

The work is being performed by the Regional Rivers Repair Fleet Medium Capacity Fleet (R3F MCF) with the majority of personnel coming from the USACE Pittsburgh District. Black Rock Lock personnel will also be assisting.  Additionally, there will be contractor support providing a barge and crane to lift the gates.

As reported in March 2018 during initial repairs to the lock, these repairs will be conducted during the winter of 2018-19 in order to prevent delayed opening for the 2019 navigation season. “Traffic is anticipated to resume as early as May 4, 2019, in time for prime navigation season,” said Vincent Lovullo, USACE Buffalo District Project Manager. “We will work hard to minimize any impact on commercial and recreational traffic.”

The lock is 104-years old and will need future repairs, planned for the winter of 2019-20.  The lock provides $3.94 million in economic benefits to Buffalo Harbor annually.
