The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District awarded approximately $135,000 on a contract to temporarily secure the damaged sheet pile along the west pier in Little Sodus Bay, located in the Village of Fair Haven, New York.

The contractor is anticipated to begin work this summer with anticipated completion during the Fall of 2019.

“We are proud to have awarded this contract so quickly to ensure the safety and continued operation of the pier for the Fair Haven community and navigation channel users need,” said Lt. Col. Jason Toth, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Buffalo District Commander. “We will continue to push hard to get the contractor on location as quickly as possible while working with our stakeholders to secure funding for permanent repairs.”

The contract was awarded to Armitage Architects, based out of Buffalo, New York on June 11, 2019. Under this contract a temporary solution to stabilize approximately 1,000 linear feet of damaged sheetpile will be implemented by securing the damaged sheetpile to the land via cable and bracketing the sheet pile to the concrete cap to prevent further damage.

"I applaud the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for taking action to begin repair to the Little Sodus Bay West Pier.  With high lake levels along Lake Ontario this year, our community has once again been devastated by severe flooding,” said Rep. John Katko (NY-24).  “I recently invited the Army Corps Buffalo District to join me in surveying the damage to the Little Sodus Bay West Pier, and I am glad to see them give this problem the attention it deserves.  I will continue to support critical funding to rebuild and repair infrastructure surrounding Lake Ontario shoreline communities."

The navigation channel will remain open during construction.  Buffalo District is committed to doing our part to ensure public safety. The public is strongly encouraged to stay away from the detached sheet pile. A six foot tall chain link fence will surround the damaged concrete cap area and remain until funding is received to complete a full repair.

Additional federal funding will be needed for a permanent repair to the damaged area.
