Corps of Engineers to begin dredging Oswego Harbor

Published June 22, 2016

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Buffalo District has awarded a $926,000 contract to dredge Oswego Harbor, NY, this summer.

The contract was awarded to Luedtke Engineering Company of Frankfort, MI.

A total of 175,000 cubic yards of sediment will be dredged from the federal navigation channel.  Dredging will be performed at the harbor mouth, in the outer harbor, and within the western channel area.  Work is expected to begin on approximately June 27, and be completed in late July.

"This dredging will deepen the waterway and keep the job-creating Oswego harbor open for business. From commerce to recreation, the Port of Oswego and Oswego Harbor are assets to Central New York's regional economy, and federal investment will ensure their contribution continues," said U.S. Senator Charles Schumer.

"The Oswego Harbor is critical to boosting our regional economy and to growing tourism -- especially in the summer months, when we see increased recreational boating and fishing in the Port City," said Representative John Katko. "I commend the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for its commitment to improving the Harbor and to ensuring that this crucial body of water is fully functional."

Dredging of Oswego Harbor allows bulk commodities to pass through the harbor, supporting more than 24,000 jobs which generate over $2 billion in total annual business revenue" said LTC Adam Czekanski, USACE Buffalo District commander.  "The harbor is a major receiving port on Lake Ontario and part of the larger Great Lakes Navigation System.  Proper maintenance of this system is critical to ensuring our Nation's industrial strength.
