Great Lakes Program

The Great Lakes are an international resource shared by the United States and Canada that contain approximately 6.5 quadrillion gallons of fresh surface water, totaling 20 percent of the world’s supply, and 95 percent of the United States supply. The system includes parts of eight states and one province: Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, and Ontario. The Great Lakes Basin, including the international section of the St. Lawrence River at Cornwall, Ontario and Massena, New York, covers approximately 299,000 square miles. Due to the large size of the watershed, physical characteristics such as climate, soils, and topography vary across the basin.

Congress has authorized a variety of programs, specific to the Great Lakes, which offer additional capabilities for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Great Lakes Districts (Buffalo, Chicago, and Detroit) to protect, maintain, and restore the natural resources of the Great Lakes.
