Erie Army Depot
The former Erie Army Depot (EAD), located in Port Clinton, Ohio was utilized 50 years ago for ordnance testing, which involved firing live and inert explosives into Lake Erie.
Since 1966, Erie Industrial Park has privately-owned 60,000 acres of the property with Camp Perry owning the remaining 36,000 acres.
The site is being investigated under the Defense Environmental Restoration Program for Formerly Used Defense Sites following the process outlined in the Comprehensive Environmental Responsibility, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA).
An Information Session will be held Tuesday, December 2, 2008, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Carroll Township Town Hall, 11080 West Toussaint East Road, Oak Harbor, OH 43449.
The meeting topics will include findings from a surface clearance of unexploded ordnance (UXO) completed in the spring of 2008 on the Beach Area of the Former Erie Army Depot and an upcoming removal action.
The USACE Buffalo District will be performing a surface removal of unexploded ordnance (UXO) on the Beach Area of the Former Erie Army Depot beginning in December 2008.
This work is being performed under an Action Memorandum signed in June 2007 to reduce the potential hazards to the public from UXO.
With guidance from the USACE Huntsville Ordnance-Explosives Design Center, UXO specialists will use hand held ordnance detection devices such as metal detectors to search the areas depicted in the figure.
Should metal be indicated, the area will be excavated by hand to the extent necessary to fully identify and remove/destroy any partially exposed munitions and explosives of concern. If discovered, UXO will be destroyed in place or in designated areas by detonation.
Trained personnel will work closely with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Natural Areas and Preserves before any on-site work commences, to define potential archaeologically significant areas, sensitive plants and animal habitats that must be protected, and to establish steps to avoid or minimize impacts.
Prior to any excavation or detonation, the impacted area will be investigated, endangered or threatened plants and animals removed, and archaeologically significant items removed or protected. Disturbed areas will be backfilled, if necessary, to minimize exposure to the elements.
Remember the 3Rs
ecognize
When you discover a suspicious item or a possible munition, remember that they can be very dangerous. Do not touch, kick, throw something or do anything else to disturb the item. Also, remember that old munitions are sometimes not readily identifiable, and may appear to be any other metallic or rusty item. Use caution, leave it alone and do not touch it.
etreat
If you know or suspect that you have found a possible munition, mark the area with a small item, such as a hat or pen, and immediately walk away on the same path you came in on. Do not run.
eport
Report the location of the suspicious item immediately to your local law enforcement officials by dialing 911.
