Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program

Bliss & Laughlin Steel Site Status

A radiological survey in 1992 by the Department of Energy (DOE) indicated residual radioactive material above guidelines on the floor and overhead trusses of the area formerly used for uranium processing. This material was fixed to the surface, and could not be spread to other areas. The contamination did not present an exposure hazard to workers or members of the general public under the conditions and use of the site at the time.

The Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study (RI/FS) and Proposed Plan were released for public comment on September 28, 1998. The Record of Decision (ROD) for remediation of the site was signed on December 11, 1998.

The Buffalo District completed remediation of the Bliss & Laughlin Site in March of 1999, and the Closure Report has been completed and placed in the Administrative Record file for the site.
