Project Status
The Corps of Engineers signed a Record of Decision for the Mudflats Operable Unit of the Tonawanda Landfill Vicinity Property on September 30, 2008.
The Record of Decision states that no action is warranted on the Mudflats Operable Unit because the radiological risks, for all media, from radium, uranium and thorium present, are within the risk limits established in the National Oil and Hazardous Substances Pollution Contingency Plan (NCP) for both the current and reasonable future site uses.
The Corps has identified the reasonable future site use for the Mudflats Operable Unit as commercial/industrial.
The Corps of Engineers will conduct additional sampling in the Landfill Operable Unit of the Tonawanda Landfill Vicinity Property.
The Corps is performing this evaluation in response to comments received on the Proposed Plan for the Tonawanda Landfill FUSRAP Vicinity Property, which was released for public review and comment on March 26, 2007.
The purpose of the sampling will be to confirm the levels and extent of uranium, radium and thorium in the Landfill.
About the Tonawanda Landfill Site
In 1992 the Department of Energy (DOE) designated two properties, the Town of Tonawanda Landfill and the Mudflats Area, into FUSRAP as a single Vicinity Property of the Linde Site.
The designation was based on DOE's discovery of radioactive material at the site, that appeared to have similar characteristics to material found at other FUSRAP sites.
However, no records have been found indicating the Vicinity Property was ever involved in past Manahattan Engineer District or Atomic Energy Commission activities.
