  • The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Buffalo District has two employees, Greg Kiaer and Melissa Tarasiewicz, who were selected for, and graduated the USACEs Engineer Research Development Center University (ERDC-U) program in 2018.

Army Corps of Engineers Buffalo District Biologists, Eric Hannes, Christine Cardus, and Kathleen Buckler along with a team of Biologists from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (OEPA) led by Linda Merchant-Masonbrink and Angela Adkins performed pre-construction wetland assessments on 12 acres of an existing wetland, as part of the Great Lakes Fisheries and Ecosystem Restoration (GLFER) Authority Project, October 1 and 2, 2018.

    Buffalo District Celebrates ‘Phenomenal Efforts’ as they End Fiscal Year 2018

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District just closed out another successful Federal Government Fiscal Year (FY); FY2018.

    To address the gradual loss of a historic barrier beach and the erosion of over 100 acres of wetlands at Lake Ontario’s Braddock Bay, a GLRI project team has implemented Engineering With Nature principles to provide a sustainable restoration solution. This project completed the last management action necessary for the future delisting of the Rochester Embayment Area of Concern.

    In just a matter of two weeks, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District has already participated in four project ceremonies, foreshadowing what the district expects to be a busy spring and summer in 2018.

    Ever-active USACE Buffalo District dive team inspects Guajataca Dam in Puerto Rico

    Hurricane Maria made landfall in Puerto Rico in late Sept. 2017. While the majority of sustained news media coverage was concerned with power restoration, there were countless other blows to critical infrastructure resulting from the storm; the 90-year-old dam in Guajataca was one such structure.

    National Parks in the U.S. are popular tourist destinations. Cuyahoga Valley National Park in Ohio, for example, had over 2.2 million visitors in 2017. National Parks are set aside for us to appreciate nature’s beauty, and guests who visit these areas expect to see healthy wildlife, lush vegetation and clean waters. Cuyahoga Valley National Park is within the Cuyahoga River Watershed, which drains about 809 square miles, split right down the center by the Cuyahoga River; the river is one of the park’s most important natural assets.
